Flight Safety Foundation Wants Changes to 1,500-Hour Requirement
The 1,500-hour flight-time requirement for new pilots needs modification, despite the good work that produced HR 5900, the Airline Safety and FAA Extension Act of 2010 in which the revised requirement is included. So said Flight Safety Foundation CEO Bill Voss in testimony before a Senate aviation, safety and security subcommittee. “If a flight crew needs to have a specific skill set, then steps should be taken to ensure the knowledge is obtained through training or previous experience. Mandating an arbitrary number of hours makes the dangerous assumption that specific knowledge will be obtained simply due to hours in the air. This leaves too much to chance,” asserted Voss.
