Unpiloted Robinson R44 Takes Off during Engine Run

A mechanic at Glendale Municipal Airport (KGEU), Ariz., while standing next to a Robinson R44 during a maintenance run of the engine on Friday last week, lost control of the aircraft, which had been parked between two buildings near the airport’s south hangar.

The light, single-engine helicopter lifted up on its own and eventually came to rest on its side as the rotorblades disintegrated. The aircraft then caught fire. Neither the mechanic  nor any others nearby were injured.
