Crane Aerospace & Electronics will be offering an STC for its SmartStem wireless tire pressure system for the Dassault Falcon 20 and Falcon 50 starting next year. The STC retrofit kits will be available exclusively through Dassault Falcon Jet. Crane is in the process of certifying SmartStem on additional business, regional and large commercial aircraft. SmartStem offers the operator a fast and reliable method of checking tire pressure without gas loss. It is also designed to be easily retrofitted on existing aircraft. According to the company, the numerous benefits of the technology include reduced maintenance costs, improved convenience and automatic tracking of tire pressure checks (information that helps ensure safety and extends tire life). Installation requires simply replacing the existing tire inflation valve stem with a special valve stem containing integral sensors. It then wirelessly communicates tire pressure, temperature and other stored information to a handheld reader without the use of an internal battery in the stem. Since the information is communicated wirelessly and does not require the removal of the valve cap, no gas is lost during routine tire pressure checks.
