Embraer Redesigns C-390 and Seeks Launch This Year
Embraer has redesigned its C-390 tactical transport after advice from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). The new configuration has a larger fuselage, a new wing and a T-tail, and therefore now has much less commonality with the EMB-190 regional airliner. The FAB is expected to launch the program with an order for at least 22 aircraft. The twinjet-powered C-390 is now sized to compete with the C-130J, with a payload of 19 tonnes and the ability to carry up to six military 108- by 88-inch pallets. The C-390 will have a refueling probe and will also be able to serve as a tanker. Embraer president Frederico Curado recently estimated the new airlifter’s development cost at $500 to $600 million. If it receives the go-ahead this year, Embraer hopes to make a first flight in 2013.
