NTSB Rules Roush Premier 1A Accident Pilot Error

The National Transportation Safety Board ruled that the probable cause of a Hawker Beechcraft Premier 1A accident on June 27, 2010, during AirVenture at Wittman Regional Airport (OSH), Oshkosh, Wis. was the pilot’s failure to successfully complete a go-around maneuver after a botched landing on runway 18 Right.

The pilot, NASCAR team owner Jack Roush, and a passenger sustained serious injuries, but were able to evacuate the light business jet. The aircraft was destroyed when it stalled at low altitude and impacted the grounds near the temporary FAA control tower just west of the runway. The accident was caught on amateur video.

Roush admitted he was not monitoring the tower frequency during the final few seconds of his approach and became concerned about sufficient spacing between his jet and a departing Piper Cub. Roush flew through the final approach, eventually deciding to execute a go-around, but failed to add sufficient power. The aircraft broke apart on impact but did not catch fire.
